Readers Group

WRITE UP ABOUT WORLABY READERS.

Worlaby has a thriving Reading Group of ten members who meet every month to discuss the book of their choice for that particular period. It was started in May 2007 and has enjoyed a meeting every month since that time. We had a first Birthday party last May and will no doubt be celebrating this May. We are a diverse group – some retired whilst others have to make a dash from work to meet the 7.30 p.m.start . Obviously the choice of books to read, taken from lists supplied by the local Library, is as diverse as our members. We tend to make our selections then draw say five at a time from a hat, to place on our “want to read” list with the library, who are exceptionally good at meeting our requirements and being prompt with delivery to our local branch. Some of the books read are Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Fleshmarket Close by Ian Rankin, Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood and at the present moment The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd. We can always be sure of a “heated debate” where no-one is afraid of speaking out and letting us all share different views and ideas. Sometimes after a meeting we wonder if we have all read the same book.!We have started on a new idea for after our book discussions, that of reading a play before supper, which, like the food, wine and soft drinks has gone down a treat. We are at present reading Way Upstream by Alan Ayckbourn which is full of good laughs and we wonder if we could have some Thespians in our midst.! We have a great time at our meetings and rarely get away before 10.30 p.m. a sure sign we are enjoying ourselves.
